One thing Hania can really
boast about is the number of completely qualified beaches.
This meaning that the region of Chania
has
to offer one of the largest amount of blue flags compared to
rest of the regions (Rethimno, Heraklion and Lassithi).
The region of Lassithi holds
32 blue flags.
Of course this doesn't mean
that the rest of the beaches in the region don't qualify as
good beaches, it just means due to popularity, the
local
officials have gone forward to gain the additional
qualification and the required organization needed to be
claimed as a beach for the public. Some are even cleaner and
safer than others that hold a blue flag. Take Elafonissi for
instance - a unique crystal clear and pure beach, (people
come from all over the world to see the pink sand) that
doesn't have a blue flag, however, it is considered one of
the cleanest beaches in Greece. However, due to the reason
that locals want it to keep its pure look and feel, do not
want to make it a fully organised beach in any way. Who
blames them ... right?
The following image shows the
regions which poses a "blue flag". As you may notice, it is
the northern part of Chania which holds a considerable
amount of organised beaches.
