The city center of Chania is basically
another another large city of Greece - actually the 5th biggest city in
Greece - however it differs from most of them in the way it is shaped
giving it a friendly and welcoming atmosphere - as well as the
fact that it is one of the longest continuously inhabited cities in the
world, a fact that can be noticed when visiting the city. We must
mention that the best way to see the city of Chania is on foot.
Most of the streets end up in different
parts of town where the past meets the future. Starting off from new and
modern buildings leading to the Venetian architecture of the previous
conquers. Even to this day, where new building works are involved, ruins
are always found leading back to BC eras.
The city itself has always been the center
of Chania, whether it had to do with commercial means or even during war
situations, and up to 1971 was the capital of Crete - a title held now
by Heraklion.
The main symbol of modern Chania city is
the great market place - the "Agora" - which is actually the
starting point of the city and especially for all residence of the
prefecture of Chania. A building that still keeps its traditional look
on the outside and on the inside - even though some of the businesses
within the "Agora" have modernised their store-front.
